Statement of Research: You are being asked to volunteer for a research study. It is up to you whether you choose to participate or not. There will be no penalty or loss of benefits to which you are otherwise entitled if you choose not to participate or discontinue participation.
Purpose: The purpose of the research is to explore and understand faculty values, beliefs, and pedagogical decisions around the scope and purpose of integrating DEIJ related content.
Procedures and Activities: If you agree to participate, we will ask you to complete the following brief survey, which includes demographic questions and questions about your professional experience, then participate in an interview to explore the range of influences on faculty values, beliefs, and pedagogical decisions around DEIJ content in engineering, which will be audio and video recorded.
We are also asking you to share any materials/artifacts you feel comfortable sharing, such as course syllabi, teaching and DEI statements, resumes, and Curriculum Vitae (CV). Following our data analysis, we may also contact you to participate in a member-checking interview to provide you space to share any thoughts or insights on our research findings and interpretations with you. The survey is expected to take no longer than 10 minutes, and you will only complete the survey one time. The interview is expected to last between 60 and 90 minutes, and will be audio and video recorded. The member checking interview is expected to last up to 60 minutes.
Risks: The risks in participating in this research are minimal. For example, participants may encounter the risk of emotional harm when discussing sensitive topics that may evoke emotional pain. During the consent process and interview protocol, we remind participants that the information provided through the interview will remain confidential and that they have the right to refrain from responding to any question(s) that they do not wish to answer.
Some of the discussion might cause discomfort, particularly if you are reminded of troubling experiences. If any question makes you uncomfortable, you may choose not to respond to the question. Your decision not to respond to the question will not result in any penalty.
You will not receive any compensation for your participation.
Benefits: There may be no personal benefit from your participation, but the knowledge received may be of value to engineering educators and engineering education researchers. We hope to use knowledge from this research to understand further the faculty views of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice (DEIJ) in engineering education.
Taking part in this research study is your decision. Your participation in this study is voluntary. You do not have to participate in this study, but if you do, you can stop anytime. Your decision whether to participate will not affect your relationship with our study team members, Tufts University, or any other organizations. There are no penalties/consequences/loss of benefits to which you are otherwise entitled if you do not participate. You have the right to choose not to participate in any study activity or completely withdraw from continued participation at any point in this study without penalty/consequences/loss of benefits to which you are otherwise entitled.
